Obituary for Bill Oliphant

Billy Ralph Oliphant, born May 4, 1938 in Higginsville, MO, passed away March 5, 2013 at the age of 74 in Conroe, TX. He is survived by his loving wife Frances of 53 years; daughter Terri Montgomery and husband Doug; son Jason Oliphant and wife Tara; grandchildren: Josh Montgomery and wife Ashley, Chance Montgomery and wife Rachel, Bailey Oliphant, Cory Fay, and Cody Fay; great grandchildren Samantha Montgomery, Emilee Montgomery, Gage Montgomery, and Maecee Montgomery; brother Jim Oliphant and wife Velvet; brother Rodney Oliphant and wife Ladonna; sister Fernie Bretch; sister Judi Jackson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and Bill's faithful dog Archie. Bill was preceded in death by his parents James R. and Laverne Oliphant; brother Merwyn Oliphant; and sister Rosalie Oliphant. Bill graduated from Higginsville High School in Missouri in 1956 and served in the U.S. Army. He was one of the founding members in 1967 of the Cut-N-Shoot Volunteer Fire Department, and served as the Assistant Fire Chief for 11 years, from 1971 to 1982. Bill worked for AT&T for 4 years, then with Southwestern Bell Telephone until he retired with them after 30 years. He then went on to work for Builders Electric for 10 years. Bill was a Councilman for the City of Cut and Shoot from July 1979 to May 2010. Bill loved his church and church family at Trail of Life Cowboy Church where he served as trustee. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations to be made to the Trail of Life Cowboy Church Building Fund, as it is Bill's desire to see the church grow. He is dearly loved and will be missed by so many. The family would like to give a special thanks to Shellie and Stacy with Odyssey Health Care, and to Dr. John Bock for all the special care given to Bill. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, March 8 from 6-8 PM at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Willis. Funeral Services officiated by Pastor Josh Henry and Pastor Robert Nichols are scheduled for Saturday, March 9 at 10 AM in the Chapel at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Willis, with burial following at the New Bethlehem Cemetery in Cut & Shoot. Rodney LaVerne “Oly” Oliphant, 55, of Richmond died Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at his home.
Rodney was born on January 2, 1963 in Richmond to James Ralph and LaVerne (Eapmon) Oliphant. He married LaDonna L. Schmitz of Richmond on August 30, 1991. She survives of the home.
Survivors include one son, Mick Oliphant of Richmond, one daughter, Dominique Oliphant of Richmond, one brother and sister-in-law, Jimmie Lee and Velvet Oliphant of Lawson, MO, two sisters, Opal Fern Bretch of Overland Park, KS and Judith Ann Jackson of Independence, MO, one grandson, Zaiden Allen Oliphant, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by two brothers, Merwyn Wade Oliphant and Bill Ralph Oliphant; one sister, Bonnie Jo Oliphant; and one infant granddaughter, Natalie Faith Oliphant.
Rodney was raised and reared in Richmond, graduating in the class of 1981 from the Richmond High School. He was baptized in the First Baptist Church, Richmond.  Rodney was head of the maintenance department at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Richmond, where he has worked for the past 27 years.  He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting.  He had a big heart, enjoyed telling stories and was known to put everyone else’s needs before himself, especially his family’s.   
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Rodney LaVerne Oliphant memorial fund.

Betty Ann Phipps, 87, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
Betty was born on Jan. 24, 1935, in Richmond, the daughter of Roy Lee and Mary Elizabeth (Oliphant) Schwensen.  She was united in marriage to Andrew J. “A.J.” Phipps of Richmond on July 15, 1956; he preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 2010.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Phipps and Steven Phipps, both of Richmond; two daughters, April (Russ) Green and Julia “Julie” (Stacy) Grimm, both of Richmond; six grandchildren, Timothy M. Grimm, Andrew J. “Joe” Grimm, Joshua (Ashley) Green, Danielle Green (Jason Misenhelter), Darrell S. (Santana) Phipps, II, and Derek L. Phipps; nine great-grandchildren, Bishop Grimm, Gabriella Phipps, Gunner Green, Emma Green, Nora Misenhelter, Vincent Phipps, Taylor Phipps, Lucy Phipps, and Mason Phipps; and sister, Frances Bingham of Richmond.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant grandson, Richard Grimm; and daughter-in-law, Denise Phipps.
Betty was a lifelong Richmond resident, where she was reared and educated and graduated from the Richmond High School.  She was a housewife and homemaker.  Betty also worked outside of the home some, in the dietary department at both the Richmond and Lexington hospitals.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond and taught vacation bible school.  Betty was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and also volunteered her time at the Salvation Army in Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the American Cancer Society or to the donor’s choice.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.
