Obituary of Peggy Lou Ratliff McCuiston
Born: Feb. 4, 1938 Died: July 12, 2011 at age 73
Peggy was born in Mobile, Alabama, on February 4, 1938, and grew up in the Toulminville community where she was active in all church activities at Toulminville Baptist Church, including softball. She graduated with honors from Murphy High School in 1956 and Alabama College (Montevallo) in 1960. She then returned to Mobile to start her life as a teacher at Davidson High School. There she met her husband, Ronald McCuiston.
On February 11, 2011, Peggy and Ron celebrated fifty years of marriage. Peggy excelled at being a wife, mother and grandmother. Peggy’s children are her greatest legacy. She gave herself unconditionally to Lisa and Mark, participating in their activities in church, school, band, sports and scouting. As a grandmother, she contributed more in seven years than many do in a lifetime.
Peggy was a teacher who was perfectly suited to teaching middle school children. She treated them with great care and love. She taught at Bellview Middle School for fifteen years and at Bailey Middle School for three years. She won teacher of the year while at Bellview. Peggy retired early due to illness, but continued to volunteer at Bailey Middle School after retirement. She was also a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital.
As Peggy’s husband, Ron found the perfect wife. She taught Ron much about living. Wherever Ron’s career took the family, Peggy cheerfully created a loving home, going the extra mile, which included typing Ron’s dissertation by shutting herself in the bathroom to keep the clack, clack, clack of the old typewriter from waking the children. Peggy was thoughtful, caring, loving and forgiving, following the Christian values instilled in her by her mother. No matter what life threw at her, she was able to rise above it. She did not whine or hold grudges, and had a delightful sense of humor. Peggy was a fun, adventure-loving person who lived life to the fullest.
She is preceded in death by her son, Michael McCuiston; her parents, Sturgill and Mamie Lou Ratliff, Sr.; her brother, Sturgill F. Ratliff, Jr.; and her sister, Sharon Kay Ratliff.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ronald S. McCuiston, Pensacola; her daughter, Lisa Patrick (Arthur), Huntsville, Alabama; her son, Dr. Mark S. McCuiston (Dima), Pensacola; her grandchildren, Abigail and Shea Patrick, Huntsville, Alabama, and Amira Grace and Adam McCuiston, Pensacola; her sister, Jacqueline Miller, Mobile, Alabama; her niece, Cynthia Garner, Mobile, Alabama; her nephews, Cliff Miller (Pam) and Scott Miller, Mobile, Alabama; her nieces, Suzanne Fuller (Mac), Columbia, South Carolina and Sharon Huggins (Lester), Mobile, Alabama; and her many cousins.
Services will be held Thursday, July 14, 2011, at 11 AM at East Brent Baptist Church with Dr. Dale Patterson officiating. Visitation will be held at 10 AM at the church. Burial will be in Pinecrest Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. Pallbearers are Eugene Pettis, Mark Burns, Robert Fillingim, Bill McKay, Jim Murray, and Fitz Miller.
Flowers are acceptable as well as donations to: COTA (Children’s Organ Transplant Association), 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana 47403. Make the COTA donations in honor of Abigail and Shea Patrick.
