Loyal William "Bud" McQuiston passed away peacefully, Aug. 27, 2018 at Nottingham Place assisted living facility in Midland, after briefly suffering from acute myeloid leukemia.
Bud was born in Detroit and lived there with his parents, Loyal and Laura McQuiston, until high school graduation in 1957 whereupon he joined the U.S. Navy. He served for 11 years in many capacities – at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, aboard the USS Ranger (CVA-61), and based in South Vietnam at the Cam Rahn Bay Naval Air Facility, flying P-2 Neptune and P-3 Orion aircraft, hunting for North Vietnamese submarines. Bud rose to the rate of petty officer 1st class, as an aviation ordnanceman. He was honorably discharged in 1968.
Leaving the Navy, Bud worked many jobs – a supervisor for UPS, a construction worker in Western Michigan and Georgia and finally worked for the Board of Light and Power in Grand Haven. He worked as an operator in the city's power plant, and spent many years walking down the miles as one of the city's meter readers. He retired from the BLP in 2001.
Bud moved to Midland in August 2012. Bud enjoyed a number of hobbies over his life, including golf and woodworking. He was a devoted member of the American Legion, VFW, Eagles and Elks clubs.
Bud married twice in his life, first to Crystal Jean Boata in December 1963. After divorcing in 1976, he remarried to Sheryl Ann Wescott in May 1980, and was divorced in 2005.
Bud is survived by two sons, Brett, 50, of Livonia, and Todd, 45, of Midland. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Bethany, 22; Meghan, 17; Thomas, 15; Allyson, 14; and Alexander, 12. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Joyce; and first wife.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. in Midland. Inurnment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. at a later date. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider their local veterans organization in Bud's memory
