Betty McQuiston of Framingham, Massachusetts, died Monday, March 15, 2010 at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was a former resident of the Albuquerque Grand Court Assisted Living. Betty was born January 22, 1922 as Catherine Elizabeth Burke, the daughter of Sarah and Edward Burke. She was a resident of Massachusetts for over 50 years. Betty served as a Wave Yeoman in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1943-1946. Betty was the founding director of the Raymond J. Callahan Senior Center in Framingham. She was a pioneer advocate for the rights and improvement of services of senior citizens and was devoted to her work in this field for over 30 years. In 1980, Betty moved to San Francisco where she worked as the Branch Director of the San Francisco Senior Center until 2000. She served as the Massachusetts delegate on the National Council on Aging, was a Trustee of Cushing Hospital Auxiliary, was a member of the San Francisco Commission on Aging Citizens Advisory Committee, on the board of trustees for the Monsignor Lyme Community in San Francisco, and served on many boards and committees through her long and passionate career. Betty received citations from both the State of Massachusetts and the State of California for her service to the senior citizens of those states. Betty is survived by her seven children, Kathleen McQuiston and husband Lawrence Stueck, Marleen Ziemer and husband Kevin, Edward McQuiston and wife Jacki, James McQuiston III and wife Cathy, Brian McQuiston and wife Teri Hogan, Kevin McQuiston and wife Deborah Mockler, Christine McQuiston and partner Zobieta Puckett; seven grandchildren, Brandon McQuiston, Bonnie McQuiston, Michael Ziemer, Mark Ziemer, Gabriel Hogan, Kelli McQuiston and Sarah McQuiston; her sister-in-law, Eileen McQuiston and many endeared nieces and nephews as well as numerous friends who loved and will miss her. Memorial Services will be held at Most Holy Redeemer Church, 100 Diamond St. in San Francisco, CA, on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Additional memorial services and the funeral will be held in Framingham, Massachusetts at a later date.
