MATTIE V. McCUISTION BASKIN was born on a cotton farm outside of Stamford, in Jones County, Texas. When she was born on December 4, 1910, she was weighed on the cotton scales. She had 3 brothers & 6 sisters.
She received her B.A. from the College of Industrial Arts in Denton (later renamed West Texas State Teacher‘s College) & then she taught school in New Hope and Stamford before moving to Odessa in 1941. During World War II, she took a leave of absence to work at the Midland Air Field for the war effort.
She resumed teaching in Odessa and taught both third & fourth grade until she got her M.A. in Library Science from East Texas State Teacher's College in 1963. She finished her 43 years of teaching with the last 14 as the librarian at Gonzales Elementary School in Odessa.
Mattie V. loved to travel & went to all 50 states, taking her son, Roy Vee to 49 of them. This included Alaska & Hawaii. They also went to Canada, Mexico , Jamaica, Central & South America. Later, on her own, she spent another summer in Peru volunteering in the outpost library for Wycliff Bible Translators. She also traveled back to Alaska & Hawaii many times while Roy Vee lived in both places. She and her sister Autie went to Europe in their 70's.
She was an avid "Airstreamer" & a member of the Wally Byam Airstream Association for many years, going through several different models pulling them all around the US & Canada. She usually found a willing companion, but would not hesitate to go somewhere alone on her own.
Mattie V. was a lifelong Christian and a daily Bible reader for over 80 years. In Odessa, she was a Sunday School teacher & a member of the First Baptist Church. She was the librarian of the First Baptist Church in the 1940's, where she met & married her husband, Henry Lee Roy Baskin in Feb. 1947.
Roy & Mattie V. had a son, Roy Vee Baskin. He lives in Thailand with his wife Wanphen and two daughters, Tarinya & Metavee Baskin.
Mattie V. was very proud to be a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas as she could trace her direct lineage back to her great grandfather, William D. Hayter, who was living in the Republic of Texas (1833-1843).
Mattie V. was also a founding sponsor of the Globe of the Great Southwest in Odessa & for many years volunteered extra bedrooms to let aspiring actors stay at her home during their performances.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star & Medical Center Hospital Auxillery Volunteers.
Mattie V. spent the last 6 years of her life living in Hawaii on the Big Island with her son Roy. She was a member of the Painted Church Senior Citizens of Hawaii. She passed away on June 10, 2000. She is buried beside her husband, Henry Lee Roy Baskin, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. She is greatly missed.

Henry Lee Roy Baskin was born near Gorman, Texas in the Jewell community on January 19, 1893 to James Willis and Sarah Jeanette Bennett Baskin. He had four sisters & three brothers who reached adulthood. He married Myrtle Louise Clement, another teacher, and they had a daughter, Vashti Faxie & identical twin sons; H.L. & M. L.
Roy & Myrtle taught school in Gorman & then Olden (1923-1924). In 1924 they moved to Ranger, where Roy was a teacher & principal at Cooper Elementary School in the 1930's. Then he became the Dean of Ranger Junior College for eight years. In 1936, Myrtle passed away at the age of 40. In 1937 he received his master's degree from the University of Texas, where his thesis was on the History of Ranger Junior College.
After leaving Ranger, he taught for a year at Kermit High School, then moved to Odessa & met and married Mattie V. McCuistion, an elementary school teacher and the librarian of the First Baptist Church.
Roy and five other educators started Odessa College & he was one of the original six professors there when it was established in 1946. He served as the first registrar of the college & taught history & government until ill health forced his retirement. Roy suffered a heart attack & died a year later at age 63, at home in Odessa. He is buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens beside his wife, Mattie V., who died in 2000.
In 1968, the original building at the college was named Baskin Hall in his honor. It was later called the H.L. Roy Baskin Physical Science Building. In 2005, it was demolished because of asbestos contamination & structural damage.
Roy & Mattie V. had a son, Roy Vee Baskin. He lives in Thailand with his wife Wanphen and two daughters, Tarinya and Metavee Baskin.
