- Herbert McCuiston, at the age of 96, went to be with his Lord on August 18, 2022. Born in Harlan, KY in 1926, he was the youngest of 6 children born to Miles and Pearl McCuiston. He attended Knoxville High where he was in the ROTC program, graduating in the class of 1944-A (Jan. 1944). Herbert immediately left to serve his country in the US Army. During WWII, he served as a gunner in the 397th Armored Field Artillery Battalion,16th Armored Division in Central Europe from 1944-1946. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal WWII and Occupation Medal (Germany). After his discharge he began working for the Cavalier Corporation of Chattanooga, TN until he retired.
Herbert was married to Jewell Brogdon, literally the “girl next door” since age 13, for 64 years until her passing in 2011. He is survived by his three children, Gay McNair of Ridgeland, MS; Joy Shea (Frank) of Clyde, NC; and Bert McCuiston (Annamaria) of Rock Hill, SC; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his consistent, positive, and generous love, support and involvement with his children.
Herbert was a life long Christian serving as a deacon in churches in Memphis, TN, Jackson, MS, and Sevierville, TN before moving to the Haywood Lodge in 2015 where he attended First Baptist Church of Waynesville, NC.
His burial was arranged by Berry Highland Memorial in Knoxville, TN with a private family graveside service and military honors. Many thanks to his friends from First Baptist Church, Waynesville for their calls and visits as well as the caregivers in his last months, Kennedy, Paul, Rebecca, Sheila, Mikel and Savannah.
