John J. McQuiston, 74, of Cortland, OH passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. He was born January 29, 1950, in Salem, OH, son of the late John and Grace (Barnett) McQuiston. John moved from Salem to Warren, Ohio with his family as a teenager. He graduated receiving his diploma from Warren Western Reserve High School in 1968, he studied and earned a certification as a Metal Fabrication Specialist, working in the automotive paint industry in his early years. With this specialization skills and expertise, he dedicated 44 years of his career to work at Thomas Steel Strip in Warren. His commitment to excellence was further demonstrated through his training in Germany, where he honed his craft for Nickel Plating. He expertly ran the number 5 Nickel Plating line at Thomas Steel for many years before retirement. John played multiple high school sports and was a varsity football player for the Raiders. An avid sports fan his entire life, he enjoyed following the Cavaliers, Indians, Browns, and The Ohio State University. Many memories were made attending countless games with his family over the years. John also enjoyed car shows and playing cards, particularly pinochle. One of his biggest accomplishments was raising his three children and witnessing the growth of his three beloved grandchildren. John had a strong work ethic but always prioritized his children. John loved his family, relishing all the precious moments he had with them and was proud of all their accomplishments. As many knew him, "Big John"....will be deeply missed. He will be forever remembered by survivors; daughter, Dr. Sherry (Gary) Detrick, son, Johnny McQuiston, daughter, Kaleigh (Ashley) McQuiston, grandson, Macallister (Rosie) Westcott and twin grandchildren, Olivia and Ethan Detrick, brother, Merle (Lin) McQuiston, niece, Kellie (Ryan) Jeffers and nephew, David (Sue) McQuiston. John is also survived by; Sisters-in-law Michelle Johnson (Richard) and Mary (Bob) Avedisian; Brothers-in-law Michael (Joyce) Sekerak and Bill (Becky) Sekerak, along with several nephews and nieces. Proceeded in death by his parents, and by Brother, William McQuiston, Father- in-law, Michael Sekerak and Mother-in law, Barbara Manusakis-Sekerak. John most certainly will be missed by his little buddy Boston Terrier, Sully as they spent all of their days together after John retired. Services will be held at 12 PM on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, Warren, Ohio. Visitation and calling hours will be from 5PM to 7PM on Friday August 23,2024 and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Salem, OH.
