- Maybelle, was born Henrietta Maybelle Pope, the daughter of Samuel H. Pope and Alma Haynes, but she never like the name Henrietta so she always went by "Maybelle". She was born in Milville, MO and had 2 sisters, Gladys and Marie.
She was raised in Milville, MO, and taught school immediately upon graduating (without a certificate or degree). Shortly thereafter, her family moved to Arizona in the hope that the drier climate would cure her father's tuberculosis, but the cure was unsuccessful; her father died on 12/9/1917, when she was 17 years old.
Many years later she went back to school and in 1939 she earned a teaching degree from Arizona State Teachers College in Tempe, Arizona. She was very proud of her education and always used to encourage her loved ones to "make something of yourself".
Maybelle moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met and married my grandfather, Archie C. Barnett on October 31, 1953.
Archie & Maybelle never had children of their own; however, in 1977 they began babysitting Devon Detweiler (the daughter of a friend of theirs), whom they grew to love immensely. They maintained a close relationship with her throughout their lives and referred to her as their "hanai grandaughter".
Maybelle maintained a positive outlook, a quick wit and an excellent sense of humor until the day she died; she was a joy to spend time with and was loved immensely. She died peacefully at home, shortly before her 109th birthday. She donated her body to science, was later cremated and she is now interred, next to her parents and grandparents, at the New Hope Cemetery in Milville, MO.*
