He was in the U.S. Army from 1945-47, serving in the Philippines. Following his service in the Army, he attended San Angelo Junior College, graduating in 1949 and went on to graduate from Hardin-Simmons University in 1951. He married the love of his life, Jeanne Smith Box on Aug. 23, 1952. They lived in San Angelo most of their lives. Jeanne preceded Max in death on Oct. 3, 2002. Max began his teaching/ coaching career at Lee Junior High in 1951. His first group of young men remains true to him today. He treasured their friendship and took pride in their successes in life. From 1952-60, he coached at San Angelo High School. Beginning in 1960, he coached at Killeen High School, where he was honored with the "Teacher of the Year" award. After a one-year stint coaching at Anahuac, he returned to San Angelo as the P.E. teacher at Santa Rita Elementary, eventually retiring in 1986 from San Angelo Central High School. Whatever the title, he was loved by all of those whose lives he touched. Teaching was so much more than a career to Dad. His grandchildren affectionately knew him as "Bull" or "Paw-Paw" and they were truly the light of his life. His immeasurable love for his children and the grandchildren was evident in all aspects of his life. He will always hold such a special place in their hearts. They will forever cherish the memories of his love and his quick-witted "words of wisdom." His unconditional love will continue to be a constant in their lives.
