John Jerald Gregory, 97, formerly of La Grande, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise.
He was born in Wallowa, the son of Dr. John B. and Margaret (Boner) Gregory. He went to grade school and high school in Wallowa and graduated with the Class of 1931.
He attended the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Jack owned and operated a Ford dealership in Enterprise for four years. On April 6, 1939, he married Verla C. Eddlemon. They began ranching in the Wallowa Valley and then in 1947 moved to La Grande.
In Union County, Jack raised registered Herefords and successfully rode and showed American Saddlebred horses throughout the Northwest during the 1950s.
He was a retired American Horseshow Association Judge, past president of the Union County Cattlemen Association and was named Cattleman of the Year in 1969. He served on the La Grande School Board and was a member of the La Grande Country Club where he thoroughly enjoyed the tournaments and playing the game. Jack was a past member of the Elks, a lifetime member of the Joseph Masonic Lodge No. 81 of Wallowa County and a member of the Methodist Church.
Known for his gentlemanly mannerisms and integrity as an adult, at an early age he developed empathy for the hardships people face in life through the work he did for his father, a pioneer doctor.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years; his daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Sam Wade of Lostine, and Jean and Neil Cooper of LaGrande; five grandchildren and their spouses, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Kathryn (Gregory) McFarland, and sister-in-law and her husband, Vera and Harold Burgett.
A graveside service at the family plot at the Wallowa Cemetery will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Services are under the direction of Bollman Funeral Home.
