Donald Raymond Winger, 89, Kokomo, passed away at 5:57 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2016, at I.U. North Hospital in Carmel. He was born August 24, 1926, in the farm home in Grant County, to Raymond A. and Lenore (Harter) Winger. On December 1, 1945, he married Julia Claire Pyke, at Kokomo Zion Evangelical Church, and she survives.
Don graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1944. He became a farmer, as was his father and grandfathers, and he learned from his father the basics of being a good steward of the soil as well as how to raise livestock. He was a member of Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church where he was very active, serving as Youth Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Zion Building Programs, Trustee, Finance Committee Staff, Parish Committee, Ad Council Lay Delegate Annual Conference, Welcome Committee, Mission Auction Chairman, Mission Committee Local, Conference and District, United Methodist Conference Mission Board, and District Mission Board. He was also very active in the community, serving on the County Zoning Appeals Board, Township Advisory Board, Eastern School Board, Greentown Area Business Association, Greentown Economic Development Committee, 4-H Leader, 4-H Fair Chairman, Food Tent Chairman, Lions Fair Board, Lions Club President and member, Licensed Auctioneer and Real Estate, Chairman of the Eastern Athletic Boosters, Howard County Farm Bureau Board, Howard County Farm Bureau Coop Board and WCM (Winger, Cheeks and Middlesworth). He had received the 4-H 13 Year Award in 1975, the Bread & Basin Award at the 1995 United Methodist Conference, and the WP Woods Fellow Award from the Lions Club in 2012. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.
In addition to his wife of 70 years, Julia “Judy” Winger, he is survived by two sons, Steven (Deborah) Winger and Bradley (Cami) Winger; son-in-law, Carl Oyler; grandchildren, April (Chris) Pangburn, Scott (Amanda) Oyler, Jamie (Keith) Combs, Cortney (Josh) Dommer, Drew (Megan) Winger, Chad (Jama) Winger, Michael (Kayla) Winger, and Joshua (Jessica) Winger; step-grandchildren, Adrian (Casey) O’Reilly, Noah (Sarah) O’Reilly, Rachel (Steve) Middleton, Anna (Michael) Rabenow, Megan O’Reilly and Shane Ragland; great-grandchildren, Kate and Tanner Pangburn, Keiton, Rafe and Sydney Combs, Kyle Bourff, Austin and Luke Oyler, Makenna, Keira and Kade Dommer, Hayley Higgenbottom, Jacob Winger, Elle and Hank Winger, Brayson and Tylan Winger; step-great-grandchildren, Lilly, Rose and Ashton O’Reilly, Gideon O’Reilly, Jackson Middleton, Siegfried and Reilly Rabenow, and Giovanni and Natalia Ragland; and sisters, Leah Joyce Hubbard and Joan Schaaf.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebecca Sue Oyler; and brother, Loren Winger.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church, 5051 E. 400 N., Kokomo, with Rev. Kevin Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church.
