Martha Jean Lavengood, 88, Kokomo, passed away at 11:37 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2019, at Brookdale Anderson Senior Living in Anderson, South Carolina. She was born March 15, 1930, in Center, Indiana, to Jesse Earl and Dorothy (Phillips) Pyke. On June 28, 1953, she married Roy K. Lavengood, at the Converse Church of Christ, and he preceded her in death on November 20, 2015.
Jean graduated from Jackson Township High School in Howard County in 1948 and from the Wishard Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis in 1954. She worked as a registered nurse for four years at Home Hospital in Lafayette, sixteen years at Wabash County Hospital and thirteen years at the Veteran’s Hospital in Marion. She also worked for ten years with the One Mission Society. She was a member of the Nurse’s Association and Greentown Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Daniel (Cindy) Lavengood, Brian (Katrina) Lavengood and Dennis Lavengood; daughter, Lori (Roy) Reinertsen; daughter-in-law, Kristin Lavengood; grandchildren, Amanda (Ryan) Weaver, Jason (Jessica) Lavengood, Kara (Chris) Pogue, Amber (Wyatt) Henry, Danielle (Sean) Hughes, Dr. Matthew (Sarah) Lavengood, Dr. Samantha (Ben) Boucher, Kevin DeRossett, Dennis L. Lavengood, Levi Lavengood, Madison (Eric) Edmondson, Meghan Reinertsen and Nicholas Reinertsen; and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dr. Todd Lavengood; and a granddaughter, Michelle Lavengood DeRossett.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Greentown Wesleyan Church, 120 N. Maple St., Greentown, with Rev. Paul Boss officiating. Burial will follow in Kokomo Zion Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Contributions may be made in Jean’s memory to Greentown Wesleyan Church.
