James "Mack" McQuiston, 78, passed away Friday, July 7, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
Born in Huntsville, AL, December 28, 1938, he served in the U.S. Air Force for over 11 years. Following his time in the military, Mack lived in Orlando, FL where he worked for the City of Orlando Fire Department as an engineer and retired as a Lieutenant after 20 years of service. He had lived in Gastonia prior to moving to Hendersonville in 2004. He was active in the VFW and American Legion, serving area veterans. He was affiliated with Mud Creek Baptist Church.
Mack not only served his country, but also his family. If his beloved wife, Virginia, was considered the heart of the family, he was the rock. Solid, hardworking and dependable, he often worked two jobs to support his family. He made sure cars were running and needs were met. He greatly cared for his family and showed his love through his deeds. Mack demonstrated quiet and continuous generosity, selflessness and commitment to his family, even during severe illness, and this generosity extended through his life to the community. He was especially devoted to Virginia, who died in April of this year. As a father, he enjoyed family time and having fun together. Camping, game time, boating and cookouts were favorite family pastimes. Although he will be greatly missed, knowing that he is with his great love, his wife Virginia, consoles the family.
Mack is survived by four daughters, Pamela Gause, Donna McMahon, and Angela Gause, all of Hendersonville, and Patricia McQuiston of Alabama; nine grandchildren, three of whom live locally, Jessica Murray, Gabriella Andersen, and Alexander Andersen, and seven great-grandchildren.
Per his wishes there will be no service. Memorial contributions may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

Virginia McQuiston, 84, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. Born in Gaston County, she was the daughter of Everett and Evelyn Webb Tanner.
