Richard James "Jim/Chief" McQuiston (1938 - 2017)
Richard James "Jim/Chief" McQuiston, 78, Monticello, left his earthly body at 6:29 p.m., Monday, May 1, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on Sept. 26, 1938, in Kokomo to the late Lewis C. and Delihia (Stephens) McQuiston. On Dec. 10, 1960, in Kokomo he married Sharon A. Chorrushi; she survives.
Jim and his wife, Sharon, have lived in the Monticello area for the last several years, coming from Kokomo.
He was the youngest of 14 siblings, Clara, Lewis Corbin Jr., Glen, Kenneth, Margaret, Anna, Betty, Katherine, Mildred, Charles, Herbert, Robert, and Patricia.
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1956 - 1962 as a Machinist Mate First Class.
He retired from Continental Steel of Kokomo.
At the age of 14, Jim and his best friend, Joe Moser, worked laying railroad tracks.
While attending Kokomo High School, he worked at the A & P Grocery Store as a stock boy.
Jim loved spending time at home tinkering in his shop creating wood art, smoking his pipe, working crossword puzzles, pampering his cat, Joe, and admiring and marveling at nature.
He was admired by all who knew him.
Surviving are wife, Sharon A. McQuiston; children, Robin (Robert) McIntire, Monte McQuiston, and Pamela (Eric) Stevenson; grandchildren, Elizabeth Wallace, Edward (Natalie) McIntire, Amanda (Matthew) Heady, Luke Stevenson, and Danielle Stevenson; great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Ford, Kendall Wallace, and David McIntire; brother, Herbert (Barbara) McQuiston; sister, Mildred Arnold; special brother-in-law, John Chorrushi Sr.; and his cat, Joe.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis C. and Delihia (Stephens) McQuiston; five brothers; and six sisters.
Visitation will be from 3 - 5 p.m. Saturday at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello. Full Military Rites by the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard will be at the funeral home at 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by a Celebration of Life Service with Rev. Ken Smith of the Hickory Grove Church of rural Carroll County officiating.
