Following a brief illness Joan McQuiston Twiss died at Copley Hospital, Morrisville, VT with her husband Robert "Bob" Twiss at her side. Joan was born in Lynn, MA on June 9, 1933. Her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Raymond McQuiston, resided in Newton, MA. Mrs. McQuiston was the former Catherine Duggan of Peabody, MA, and Joan's father was a chemical engineer from Waltham, MA. Joan's older sister Ruth resided with her parents.
Joan spent her younger years at home in West Newton, MA and attended the local elementary school. She later enrolled in Dana Hall for her secondary education.
Her continuing desire for academic challenges led to enrollment at U.S.C where she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree. Following a few years of teaching math she went to Seville, Spain, to teach American students in the Air Force program. She then returned to Newton, taught elementary school and earned a Master's degree in education at Boston University.
Another opportunity arose to teach abroad in Japan with U.S. Navy students. This further expanded her professional experience and upon completion of this assignment Joan retuned to the U.S. to teach again in the Newton Public School system. Concurrently she again pursued graduate studies and completed the doctoral program at Boston College. This completed twenty happy years teaching in her hometown of Newton.
Certified in, and seeking an assignment in school administration, Joan succeeded in being selected as the Harwich Elementary principal on Cape Cod. She performed her duties successfully with the result that she was chosen for another administrative position in Marshfield, MA, where she worked though 1987.
In 1988 Joan married A. Robert Twiss; they lived in Chatham, MA until 1995, when they moved to Craftsbury Common, VT. Here they have maintained residence to the present.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, her sister Ruth Burris and her cousin Marsha Mierzwa. Joan is survived by her husband Bob and his two children, Jeff Twiss and Deborah Dickovic. Alson surviving her are: brother-in-law James Burris, Madison, CT; cousins Robert McQuiston, Washington, DC and Fail Bursk, Portland, ME; six nieces and nephews Karen (Michael) Lennon, NYC, Susanne Burris, NYC, Laura (John) Desmarais, Mt. Kisco, NY, James (Erin) Burris, NYC; ten great-nieces and nephews Lauren (Sean) Lombardi McGann, Jack and Julia Desmarais, James and Jennie Burris, Elizabeth and Andrew Libonati, and Raymond II and Mateo Burris; and one great great nephew Matthew.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, Craftsbury, VT on Thursday August 11, 2016 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Francis Prive officiating. Interment will follow at the Craftsbury Common Cemetery. Should friends desire contributions in her memory may be made to the Orleans Essex VNA and Hospice, Inc., 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, VT 05855.
