Geraldine M "Gerry" Bengry, 86, of Marquette, passed away Sunday evening, November 1, 2015 at UP Health System-Marquette. Gerry was born on November 16, 1928 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Charles and Ruth (Gentz) McNerney and was a lifelong Marquette resident. Gerry came from a very musical family. As a child, Gerry along with her sister, Shirley, sang at the Delft Theater, which held many musical events in the mid 1930's. They were known as the "Sun Bonnet Sweethearts" and took first place on one occasion. Gerry and Shirley had beautiful sisterhood harmony and were between the ages of seven and nine when they sang together. On October 21, 1950, Gerry married Gerald (Dave) Bengry in Marquette. Gerry enjoyed hunting and fishing. She and her late husband, Dave traveled south to Texas every winter during their retirement. Gerry was a member of American Legion Post #44 Auxiliary, Marquette Elks Lodge #405 Auxiliary and was an avid cribbage player. Up until her recent illness, she still enjoyed playing cribbage with her sister Joan Fontaine and friends. Survivors include her sister, Joan Fountaine of Marquette; a brother, Charles (Ramona) McNerney of Little Lake as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was husband, Gerald (Dave) Bengry in 2000 as well as a sister Shirley Bowers and brothers, George and James McNerney. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 14th at 1 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of service in the funeral home. A private burial will take place.
