Obituary for "JH" James Henry McCuistion
JH “James Henry” McCuistion went home on October 27, 2017 at the age of 85. He spent his last moments in his home surrounded by friends and family, the people most important to him.
JH was born August 9, 1932, in Fowler, Colorado, to James E. and Nellie I. (Smith) McCuistion. JH spent his life giving back to the community he loved. He was happiest when he was serving others. He was a natural leader, holding the Eagle Scout award, which shaped many of his strongest values. … His scouting experience and his strong family foundation of helping others led him to hold many roles in his life including Sunday School teacher, Scout leader, 4-H leader and many others. JH did it all. One of the greatest gifts he gave to Fowler was his leadership and organization of Fowler’s Annual Missouri Day Celebration.
JH graduated from Fowler High School and held multiple positions of employment in Fowler and beyond; the most notable ones include butcher at Browning’s Grocery, butcher/meat cutter at Jensen Blue Ribbon Processing, livestock yard manager at the Fowler Auction and manager of Manzanola COOP. However, many will remember him more for his daily acts of kindness, whether it be sharing produce from his garden, helping with any task you needed or doing kind, unnoticed jobs just because they needed done.
Passion is what drove JH. He received his first horse at nine years old, and describes it as his first toy. As a young boy he drove mules all over the country, for a man who had contracted mules for the Army. Gardening to farming, there was no other man who could grow produce like JH. Above all, JH’s meat cutting skill was untouchable. Everyone who ever encountered JH can still feel his handshake or “friendly” shoulder squeeze. Though the stories are innumerable of JH’s strength and power, no one could top his captivating storytelling ability. Every story had a lesson and every lesson had a story.
Wealth to JH was defined not by what he had, but by his most important relationships; he was the epitome of a family man. He married the love of his life on August 16, 1953, Marybeth Walker of Fowler. Their 64 years of marriage is a testament to the value of living a life of commitment. He is survived by his wife and his five children, Jim (Holly) McCuistion of Sugar City, Carl (Karen) McCuistion of Wilson, OK, Mark (Shari) McCuistion of Fowler, Janelle (Jim) Baldwin of Fowler, and Linnea (Chuck) Spicer or Erie, 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and countless others who called him Grandpa. He is also survived by five siblings: Dorothy Baker and Jean Petrie of Fowler, Verena Rogge of Littleton, Willis McCuistion of Tucson, AZ and Maxine Adcock of Swink. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Martha McCuistion and Marie Tilson and grandson Yancie McCuistion.
JH was a man of many words that were always filled with wisdom. Up until his final moments he told each of his family members, “You are the best!.”
