      Subject: McQuiston Family

      Good afternoon,

My name is Gerry Hand and I am inquiring about membership in the
      Macusidean Clan.

My scottish ancestor Great Grandfather John McQuiston was born in Shotts,
Lanark, Scotland on 02 Oct. 1860 . His residence in 1881 was in Salsburgh ,
Scotland. (Scottish census) He immigrated to the U.S. in 1885. The 1920 U.S.
census shows he was living in Grandville, Il.

His father James Mcquiston was born 1833 in Ireland but the 1881 Scottish
census shows he was living in Salsburgh, Scotland. He married Mary
Magee, 09 June 1855 in Newtownards, Down, Ireland. Her father's name was
Patrick Magee. James's father was Robert Mcquiston. The search has ended
there. I contacted Ancestory. com & Scotlandspeople and they informed that
there was a fire in the building located in Belfast in 1930's that destroyed all of
      the records.

My family had told me over the years that the McQuiston's were a sept of the
MacDonald Clan. All my scottish family members have by now pasted
away. However, the family's listed on the MacDonald are shown as McQuistan
or McQuisten. The MacUsidean does show the family spelling name as
      McQuiston.

Any information would be of great help. I am a member of the St. Andrew's
Society of Detroit and I am currently wearing a McDonald Dress Modern
tartan. They do not require verification of clan affliation only documentation of
your ancestor's birth in Scotland. But as members we do talk about our clans.

I am very puzzled about the spellings when most Scots tell me that there are
      so many different spellings.

      Please and thank you,

      Gerry Hand
