Born Jan. 11, 1926 in Grand Rapids, a son of Hugh and Harriett (Fisher) McQuiston, Sr., Hugh was raised in Grand Rapids and graduated from Central High School. He later attended Florida Junior College in Jacksonville. Hugh entered the US Army in 1944 and began a distinguished military career that spanned over 27 years. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and during the Vietnam Era. During World War II, he spent three months in a German prisoner of war camp and, in 1967, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in action in Vietnam. The medal was personally presented by Vice President, Hubert H. Humphrey. Hugh served as US Army recruiter in Marquette from 1961 to 1965 and then was stationed at Ft Leonard Wood, Missouri, as a drill sergeant. Throughout the years, he received many awards, commendations, and medals for his military service. He retired from the Army in 1971. In 1991, he retired from the Florida Health Department where he was employed as a medical lab technician. Hugh and wife, Shirley, divided their time between residences in Marquette and Orange Park, Fla. In his leisure, Hugh enjoyed flower gardening and doing yard work. He was a member of the VFW and DAV in Orange Park, Fla.
