Funeral service will be Saturday for Bruce A. McQuiston, Jackson Township (Mercer), who passed away peacefully with his family by his side at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. He was 75.
Born Oct. 6, 1939, in Sharon, he was a son of Howard M. and Lillian M. Collenette McQuiston.
After graduating at 17 from Mercer High School, he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Navasota as a machinist mate.
Upon his return after three years in the Navy he began using his skills as a machinist and millwright to expand his knowledge in the steel industry and worked as an electrician in the blooming mill at Sharon Steel. During this time he also discovered a passion for the real estate business.
In 1969, he and his brother Bob combined their efforts and formed Flexospan Steel Buildings Inc. in Sandy Lake, where they initially focused on producing structural framework and pre-engineered buildings. Today the business has grown into a multi-faceted producer of steel buildings and components, employing more than 60 full-time employees. Bruce was well known and respected in the steel industry and was currently serving as vice president and owner of Flexospan.
He was known as an extremely caring person and for his strong work ethic, always rolling up his sleeves and making things happen. He learned to work at a young age on the family farm, where they operated a nursery and Christmas tree farm. He was very dedicated and carried these traits throughout his life and made a difference in many lives over the years.
Bruce was involved in numerous charitable, civic and community matters, including the donation of land and the building and development of McQuiston Center by the Park, along with his brother. It houses the Sandy Lake Senior Center, which they dedicated in honor of their mother, Lillian McQuiston. His generosity was genuine and discreet.
He also founded the Flexospan Foundation, formed to provide scholarships to students in obtaining a college or trade school education. Throughout his life, Bruce generously shared his knowledge and provided guidance, support and encouragement to countless individuals and helped them achieve their goals. He was highly respected and appreciated as a mentor and a friend by people throughout the country of all ages and disciplines. He recently received the honor of being named as a Mercer County Distinguished Citizen by the French Creek Council of Boy Scouts of America.
Bruce served on many boards and was active with many organizations, including Mercer County Regional Planning Commission, Lakeview Area Industrial Corp., board of appeals, advisory board of the welding program at the Mercer County Career Center, and the Sandy Lake Rotary Club.
He was a 32nd Degree member of Hermitage Lodge 810, Free and Accepted Masons, New Castle Consistory, with Scottish Rites, and Zem Zem Shrine, Erie.
His wife, the former Judy M. McClung, whom he married Aug. 6, 1971, survives at home.
