You
Hi Gloria,
I’m always happy to consider my 5th GGM Isabel McQuiston. I surely wish I knew more about her! Every detail I find just seems to lead to more questions.
—She was born in Ireland (per 1850 census, and per daughter Sarah Crowell Grant’s 1880 census record). I assume she was from Ulster, given the Scottish surname and the migration to North Carolina in that time period.
—Her middle name MAY have been Matilda (can’t recall where I saw this, unfortunately, but have held onto it as a potential clue).
—Her father may have been Joseph McQuiston. (Joseph McQuiston signed her marriage bond for her marriage to John Crowell and was involved in Lewis McQms. probate, as noted below).
—At the age of 75 she was listed in the 1850 US census for District 42, Henry Co., Georgia. I assume that is where she died.
—Her son Robert David McQuilliams was born 15 March 1796.
—First husband Lewis McQ had probate records in 2 NC counties—Mecklenburg and Pasquotank. Joseph and Isabel are both listed as having bought items at the public auction of his estate in Pasquotank (November 1796). Joseph McQuiston is listed as an administrator of his estate. Isabel and Joseph are both listed in estate papers for Mecklenburg County as well, dated Oct. 1796.
—The wedding date you listed below is when she married John Crowell (not Crowley).
—John Crowell was born 1772 in NC and was also still alive in the 1850 census of Henry, Georgia.
— Isabel and John had 10 children, most of them born in NC. One child (William D Crowell) may have been born in SC.
—They seem to have been in NC for the 1840 census. Not sure when they moved to Georgia.
I’ll attach a screen shot of my Ancestry page listing their children. I have not yet thoroughly fact-checked all the details given, but it’s based on general consensus of other descendants.
Can you tell me what was the source of the information you listed, as indicated by the footnote 1 symbol?
I look forward to learning more about the McQuistons some day!!
Nice hearing from you,
Lisa
- [S1308] McQuiston, Isabel.
