Jacque S. Greiff, 72, passed away on August 21, 2024, in Altoona, PA. Born on September 20, 1951, in Lewisburg, PA. Jacque was a man whose very presence was unforgettable, possessing a charisma that drew people to him in any social setting. He was deeply passionate about firefighting and rescue services. This passion wasn't just a career but a calling that he pursued with unwavering dedication, inspiring others to strive for greatness and compassion in their own lives.
He graduated from Warrior Run High School in 1969 and pursued extensive training in fire, paramedic services, hazardous materials, and rescue operations, including specialized training in rope and cave rescue. Jacque began his career in the graphic arts and screen printing in the early 1970s, a venture he continued into the 1980s. His true calling, however, was in firefighting and emergency services. He volunteered as an EMT and later became a Paramedic, serving with the Duncansville Volunteer Fire Department. Jacque taught as a Pennsylvania State Fire Academy Instructor for about seven years before founding F.I.R.E.S. (Firefighting Instruction & Rescue Educational Safety) in 1986, providing intensive, hands-on training in firefighting and rescue operations. In 1980, he joined the Altoona Fire Department, where he served with distinction until his retirement as Captain in 2006.
Beyond his professional interests, Jacque had a wide range of hobbies. He found joy in music despite not being able to read sheet music. He played the bass baritone in several drum corps in his younger years and the bass guitar throughout his life, even stepping in one night in the late 60s for The Zombies bass guitarist. He also expressed his creativity through leather crafting and sewing, mastering even the most intricate of stitch work from climbing harnesses to brocade saddle covers, and more. He was a fossil finding rockhound who loved to rappel and go caving. A devotee of history, Jacque's love for antique firefighting memorabilia spoke to his deep respect for the tradition of the service to which he devoted so much of his life.
Known for his laughter and a larger than-life personality, he left a lasting impact on those around him. He overcame challenges, including dyslexia, to inspire others with his knowledge and stories. He is survived by his loving wife, Leslie A. (Fountain) Greiff; his proud mother, Elizabeth O. "Zellie" (McCormick) Greiff; his daughter who is truly "Jacque Greiff's daughter" in almost every way, Crystal B. (Greiff) Rosensteel and her husband Christopher; and his caring sister, Beth D. Greiff. He was preceded in death by his devoted father, Kenneth W. Greiff.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, to honor Jacque's memorable journey and the profound impact he had on everyone he met. Time and location to be announced.
In lieu of traditional contributions, in memory of Jacque's lifelong dedication to helping others, performing a random act of kindness would be a fitting tribute to his legacy of generosity and service. And one final goodbye, as Jacque would say, "Be careful out there, watch out for the idiots."
