    • While putting out rock salt on his uncle's ranch, and driving himself to exhaustion; his team bolted as he dozed, throwing him backwards into the wagonbed. His head struck a block of salt. He was taken to St. Paul for hospitalization, but he died within a week. His share of the cattle was sold and his estate was split four ways - one fourth each to his parents, to his sister and to his future wife, Bessie.
