- William was found dead of gunshot wounds on outskirts of Wichita near his automobile. Two .22 calibur rifle bullets had penetrated the heart, according to the Kansas state coroner, Sam Smith; they entered the chest through a single hole and left two separate holes through the back. The coroner felt, he died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds incurred when he removed his rifle from his car. His brother stated that, "he often carried his gun in the car with the safety off" and used it often to stop and take shots at rabbits.
