      Story

Esther McQuistion, 88, of Pierre died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30 at Isburg Funeral Chapel with Visitation starting at 1 p.m. Burial is at Scotty Philip Cemetery.

Esther McQuistion was born March 20, 1923, in Princeton, Minn., to the Rev. William and Crissie Besselievre. Being the sixth of eight children, her siblings include William (deceased), Allen (deceased), Paul (deceased), Marcia (deceased), Ruth Dustin, of Tecumseh, Mich., David (deceased) and Fred (deceased).

Esther lived in Hutchinson, Minn., and DeSmet before moving to Pierre, where her father had become the minister of the Pierre Congregational Church. She graduated from Pierre High School in 1941. She met Clinton McQuistion at the Fort Pierre roller-skating rink and was united in marriage in 1942 with her father officiating. To this union, five children were born, John (Jean), of Mesquite, Texas, Mary (Wilbert) Fenger, of Gettysburg, Larry (Barb), of Fort Pierre, Patty (Louie) Chamales, of El Paso, Texas, and Gary (Shawn), of Chamberlain.

They lived in Hutchinson, Kan., for a brief period, where their first child, John, was born. Moving back to South Dakota, they started to build their ranch, living on “Chanty” Creek, northwest of Fort Pierre adding Mary, Larry, Patty and Gary to the family.

Esther enjoyed all the activities that ranch life had to offer, including her love for the many animals she raised, especially her chickens, goats (White Nanny being her favorite) and the miniature horses. She enjoyed playing the accordion, fishing, riding her motorcycles and 4-wheelers.
Esther, who was the family cook, seamstress and doctor, preferred being outside working alongside Clinton, whether it was in the hayfield, fixin’ fence or calvin’ out. She enjoyed helping wherever she was needed. Her family came first and she will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a host of nephews and nieces and Muffy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton, in December 1992; her parents; six siblings; mother-in-law, Mary, and father-in-law John; brother-in-laws, Bob H., Ike, Fred and Ray; sister-in-laws, Irene H., Fern Z., Irene, Alta and Helen; and daughter-in-law, Kristine, in July 2000.

Arrangements have been placed in care of Isburg Funeral Chapel.
