It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our father, H. David McCuistion, age 90, a resident of San Bernardino County for over 45 years, who passed away of natural causes on Sunday, February 11. He passed peacefully with family by his side after a lengthy illness.
Dave was born in Berkeley, California on October 2, 1927. After high school graduation, he enlisted and served during WW II for one year in the Navy V-5 Air Core program. He graduated from Cal Berkeley in June’49 (Phi Kappa Psi fraternity) with a BA in Business. He worked in Insurance and owned his own Agency for 14 years in San Bernardino, California. He worked in the Securities and Exchange business for 5 years. Dave joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1969. He moved the family and lived in Pleasant Grove, Utah for 14 years. He worked as a teacher and then principal for their LDS (i.e. Mormon) Seminary. He finally retired as a Seminary principal in Gilbert, Arizona in 1990 where he lived for 10 years.
He served two missions with his first wife of 45 years, Irene Wells. Their first mission was to Lima, Peru in 1981; the second to the Atlanta, Georgia temple in 1990. Upon the passing of Irene in 1994, he re-married a good friend, Bonnie McCririe, and they shared a wonderful life together for 20 years in Redlands, Calif. until she passed on January 20, 2016. Dave built their Marion Rd home, along with other spec and pre-sale homes in Redlands as well as in Arizona.
Some of Dave’s fondest memories (where he learned his work ethic) was spending summers growing up on a ranch in Utah. He loved sports (especially water skiing, racquetball, and golf), loved family gatherings, family vacations, grandpa campouts, and his church. His church callings included: stake mission president, bishopric, high council, young men organizations, and taught Gospel Doctrine and Gospel Essentials classes. We will miss the “Ox” as he was fondly named by his grandsons.
He is survived by his two sisters, Diane Bailey and Karen Sobel; his 3 children: Mike and Mitch McCuistion, and his only daughter, Lisa Hakes. Dave leaves behind from the McCuistion family 18 grandchildren and over 50 great grandchildren; also from the McCririe family 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. We can truly say that our father and family patriarch was a shining example of The Greatest Generation. We will cherish our memories of him forever.
Viewing will be at the Emerson-Bartlett Mortuary in Redlands (703 Brookside Ave) on Thursday 2/15 from 6:30-7:30 pm; the actual funeral service will be this Friday, 2/16 beginning at 10:30 am at the Mill Creek Ward on Wabash in Redlands, Calif (1761 5th Ave). The Graveside Service will follow on Saturday, 2/17 beginning at 10:00am at the Mesa City Cemetery in Mesa, Arizona (1212 N Center St). The family requests that any contribution in memory of Dave be made to the LDS Missionary Fund.
