1625 Matthew McQuesten Obituary

Matthew Warren McQuesten, 37, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2023. He was born June 16, 1986 in Lewis-McChord, Washington. Ever since childhood, Matt hoped to follow in his father's footsteps of being a first responder and saving lives. He worked hard to follow his dreams by riding alongside his second family at the Whitehall Division of Fire. He graduated from Paramedic school in December 2013 and earned his Fire Certification in the summer of 2015. Matt "Q" McQuesten, was a Federal Paramedic with the Veterans Affairs Fire Department in Chillicothe and also worked alongside his father at the St. Albans Township Fire Department. Matt and his wife, Kelli, have three sons, ages 16, 12, and 6. Jokingly called the "baby whisperer" by his family, Matt was always destined to be an amazing father. When not working, he coached his children's travel and indoor soccer teams, supporting their love for the sport, often going straight from a 24 hour shift to soccer field sidelines. He would do anything to make his kids smile. He loved taking his family on their yearly Tennessee trips and to Florida with his in-laws. Matt is survived by the love of his life Kelli, and his three sons Caleb, Parker and Grayson. He is also survived by his parents father Gregory (Edna) McQuesten; mother Melinda Mooreland; siblings Amber McQuesten, Ashley (Glenn) Farrington and Joshua McQuesten; and many other relatives and friends. He married the love of his life, Jeanne Smith Box on Aug. 23, 1952. They lived in San Angelo most of their lives. Jeanne preceded Max in death on Oct. 3, 2002. Max began his teaching/ coaching career at Lee Junior High in 1951. His first group of young men remains true to him today. He treasured their friendship and took pride in their successes in life. From 1952-60, he coached at San Angelo High School. Beginning in 1960, he coached at Killeen High School, where he was honored with the "Teacher of the Year" award. Some people called him Max, some called him "Coach," his children called him Dad and his grandchildren called him "Bull" and "Paw-Paw." 1640 Maybelle, was born Henrietta Maybelle Pope, the daughter of Samuel H. Pope and Alma Haynes, but she never like the name Henrietta so she always went by "Maybelle". She was born in Milville, MO and had 2 sisters, Gladys and Marie.

She was raised in Milville, MO, and taught school immediately upon graduating (without a certificate or degree). Shortly thereafter, her family moved to Arizona in the hope that the drier climate would cure her father's tuberculosis, but the cure was unsuccessful; her father died on 12/9/1917, when she was 17 years old.

Many years later she went back to school and in 1939 she earned a teaching degree from Arizona State Teachers College in Tempe, Arizona. She was very proud of her education and always used to encourage her loved ones to "make something of yourself".

Maybelle moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met and married my grandfather, Archie C. Barnett on October 31, 1953.

Archie & Maybelle never had children of their own; however, in 1977 they began babysitting Devon Detweiler (the daughter of a friend of theirs), whom they grew to love immensely. They maintained a close relationship with her throughout their lives and referred to her as their "hanai grandaughter".

Maybelle maintained a positive outlook, a quick wit and an excellent sense of humor until the day she died; she was a joy to spend time with and was loved immensely. She died peacefully at home, shortly before her 109th birthday. She donated her body to science, was later cremated and she is now interred, next to her parents and grandparents, at the New Hope Cemetery in Milville, MO.*
