According to the Tooele Transcript, on Monday 7 November 1921 at 10 a.m. Charley McKellar, a neighbor heard this story and rode out to the [McCuistion] ranch. While on his way (on the highway near the Denton-Morrison ranch some 22 miles northeast of Wendover) he met Will driving a wagon, upon noticing that he was unarmed he took out his rifle and shot Will. He [Charley] fled to Box Elder County where his Uncle was the District Attorney. McKellar was a former deputy sheriff of the Tooele County. He was initially charged with murder, which was later reduced to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison for the killing of Will. Tradition has it that Marybelle, Will's sister, was so angry that she chased him all the way to Colorado. Andrew refused, and the officer struck him across the cheek with his sword, leaving a lasting scar. Andrew wrote home that 'Dear old great-aunt Ann bandaged it. Ann Moody is the great aunt of General Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States. Ann was the 'Dear Old Great Aunt' referred to in Andrew Jackson's writings, who took him and sent him to school in Guilford. 1019 | Heaven opened It’s glorious gates to receive it’s newest angel, Evelyn Gates McQuiston Rich, 95 of Abilene, on March 14, 2022. Evelyn Rich was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a native Abilenian whose father was an early day settler of Abilene. Mrs. Rich was born on December 28, 1926 in Abilene to Mr. Henry Gates and Vida Fletcher Gates. City records indicate Mr. Gates purchased cemetery lots in 1900 in Abilene's City Cemetery. He was a trucker, gardener and farmer who sold vegetables to Abilene grocers during the depression years. Evelyn attended Travis Elementary, Abilene High School and Draughon's Business College. On July 8, 1943, she married Sgt. Vance Raymond McQuiston of Hammond, Indiana. They were wed in Crown Point, Indiana. Sgt. McQuiston served in World War II in the European Theatre where he received the Legion of Merit Award. Sgt McQuiston was killed in action in Korea on September 24, 1950. His body was returned on the couple's 8th wedding anniversary, July 8, 1951. Sgt McQuiston is buried in the Field of Honor at Elmwood Memorial Park. On September 6,1957, Evelyn was married to William Harold Rich of Hammond, Indiana, who was a friend of her first husband. They were married in Abilene by the late Rev. W.C. Ashford of South Side Baptist Church. Bill established his own business in 1960, Bill's Wondering Exterminating, which is owned and operated now by his son Tim Rich. Evelyn and Bill celebrated forty-three years together before Mr. Rich's death on June 23,2001. In later years, Mrs. Rich worked in retail sales at Montgomery Ward, Minter's downtown and J.C. Penney's fine jewelry department at the Mall of Abilene when it opened in 1979. Evelyn was also proceeded in death by her parents, sister Helen Taylor and brother Douglas Gates. She is survived by her children - Milton McQuiston and wife Brenda, Karen McQuiston and Tim Rich and wife Rita. Her four grandchildren - Raymond McQuiston and wife Melissa, Joe Don McQuiston and wife Betty, Kimberly Hammond and Kevin Holden and wife Nicki. Her eleven great grandchildren - Natalie Kelley, Major McQuiston, Reese Evelyn Hammond, Luke Hammond, Gage McQuiston, Macy McQuiston, Olivia Holden, Ava Holden, Ali Holden, Ariana Watson and Ryker Holden. She is also survived by her brother Jerry Wyatt and wife Wanda and numerous nieces and nephews. As a young widow and mother, Evelyn put her faith and trust in her Lord Jesus Christ and drew her strength from God's Word. The Psalms were her favorite and the 14th chapter of John. "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, oh Lord, My Strength and My Redeemer. " Psalm 19:14 Mrs. Rich was a member of Abilene Bible Church and The Ladies Senior Group. 1020 | Helen M. Tilley December 5, 1930 - August 15, 2019 Helen Tilley went to be with the Lord on August 15, 2019. She was born on December 5, 1930 to Alice and Thedell McCustion. Helen met and married the love of her life, Harold Tilley and was able to spend the next 36 years together raising their family until God called him home. She was a longtime employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and Dean Foods. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Red Hat Society, and the Business and Professional Women's Club. To her children, she was the best mother, grandmother, fried chicken and sweet tea maker known to man. She had an infectious laugh that would light up any room and could be heard in the next room. She loved life, being with her family, and especially enjoyed ballroom dancing with friends. 1021 | HELEN MACQUESTEN OBITUARY HELEN PATRICIA MACQUESTEN Helen Patricia MacQuesten, 99, of Santa Fe, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2022. Helen (she sometimes went by Patty) was born on October 14, 1922, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Frank Burton and Helen V. Hallisey Burton. She married Frederic George MacQuesten, Jr., on June 26, 1943, in Morehead, Minnesota, and began her career as a military (USAF) wife. She made a loving home for her family at postings throughout the United States, and overseas in Newfoundland, Canada; Greenham Common, England; and Seoul, Republic of Korea. Helen and Colonel MacQuesten retired to Santa Fe in 1990, and continued to travel internationally, especially to Mazatlan, Mexico, where Helen could enjoy the beach. Col. MacQuesten passed away in 2001. Helen loved living in Santa Fe, bargain shopping, traveling (especially cruises), going to the opera, playing bridge, watching British mysteries, and watching Rafael Nadal play tennis on TV. She is survived by daughters Karen Flynn (James P. Flynn) and Gail MacQuesten (Rob Madril), and by her brother Peter Burton. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 1, at the National Cemetery, followed by a gathering of family and friends at Helen's home. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Bertha (Brown) McQuiston and was born December 27, 1929, in Ellwood City. She is survived by her daughters; Gayle Fabritius and her husband Michael of Beaver Falls, Janet Wiley and her husband Robert of Ellwood City, grandchildren; Eric Fabritius and his wife Julie of Zelienople, son; Jared Fabritius and his wife Lindsey of New Castle, Robert Wiley and his wife Randa Alameh of Pittsburgh, Brock Wiley and his wife Lauren of North Carolina, great-grandchildren; Madison, Allison, River, Reagan, Paige and one sister-in-law; Allene Blayney and a brother-in-law; Les Blayney. She was preceded in death by her husband; Robert D. St. John, one son, that she lost in infancy; Robert D. St. John, II, her siblings; Norman McQuiston, Raymond McQuiston, and Ruth Lawrence She attended Wayne School and she married the love of her life, Robert D. St. John, on December 30,1950, and they were married 64 years. They were long time members of Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder in the church. She also was a member of Martha’s Circle and she was also a girl scout leader and active in 4-H. She loved crocheting and made many things for her home including doilies, afghans, and scrubbies. She loved to cook and bake and anyone who would visit her would always go home with something sweet. Helen was of Christian Faith and loved the Lord and she raised her children in church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and she was a friend to all who loved her and knew her. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her beloved family and friends. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, funeral services were private. Interment will be held in Mt. Hope Cemetery. 1043 | Herbert Francis McQuiston, aged 90 years, passed away Saturday, August 13th, 2022, at his home. He was born March 6th, 1932, in Kokomo to the late Lewis C. McQuiston Sr. and Lida (Stephens) McQuiston. On March 8th, 1958, he married Barbara Jean Grant, who preceded him in death on July 25th, 2017 after 59 years of marriage. Herbert served proudly in the Korean War from 1951 to 1954, earning the rank of Private First Class, 40th Infantry Division. After returning home, he returned to work at Continental Steel Corporation for 21 years until its closing, and then helped clean out the buildings for another month. Herbert enjoyed being out in nature, taking walks outdoors even on his last day on this Earth. He loved telling stories of his life in Kokomo and about his family, and loved his grandkids deeply. Everyone Herb met was a friend, he never seemed to meet a stranger. Herb is survived by five grandsons, Chris McQuiston, Beau Dutton, Alex McQuiston, Zack McQuiston, and Andrew Seagrave, four step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, Iris and Justin McQuiston, six step-great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, Ronan Stern, and many loving nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, seven sisters, and his sons, Brian C. "Chris" McQuiston and Timothy G. "Tim" McFarland. He will be deeply missed by everyone who was lucky enough to meet him. 1044 | Herbert McCuiston, at the age of 96, went to be with his Lord on August 18, 2022. Born in Harlan, KY in 1926, he was the youngest of 6 children born to Miles and Pearl McCuiston. He attended Knoxville High where he was in the ROTC program, graduating in the class of 1944-A (Jan. 1944). Herbert immediately left to serve his country in the US Army. During WWII, he served as a gunner in the 397th Armored Field Artillery Battalion,16th Armored Division in Central Europe from 1944-1946. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal WWII and Occupation Medal (Germany). After his discharge he began working for the Cavalier Corporation of Chattanooga, TN until he retired. Herbert was married to Jewell Brogdon, literally the “girl next door” since age 13, for 64 years until her passing in 2011. He is survived by his three children, Gay McNair of Ridgeland, MS; Joy Shea (Frank) of Clyde, NC; and Bert McCuiston (Annamaria) of Rock Hill, SC; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his consistent, positive, and generous love, support and involvement with his children. Herbert was a life long Christian serving as a deacon in churches in Memphis, TN, Jackson, MS, and Sevierville, TN before moving to the Haywood Lodge in 2015 where he attended First Baptist Church of Waynesville, NC. His burial was arranged by Berry Highland Memorial in Knoxville, TN with a private family graveside service and military honors. Many thanks to his friends from First Baptist Church, Waynesville for their calls and visits as well as the caregivers in his last months, Kennedy, Paul, Rebecca, Sheila, Mikel and Savannah.
