    James Benjamin Martin, 84 years of age, one of Richmond's oldest and best known citizens, died at the Research Hospital in Kansas City on Thursday evening October 16, 2014.

    He was born on October 27, 1929, the son of Ola Landon and Charlotte Elizabeth Morgan Martin. He was an only child and both of his parents preceded him in death.

    On January 23, 1948 he was united in marriage with Miss Bettie Lou Schooler of Richmond Missouri. Both were born in the Hickory Grove Community and grew up together.

    J. B. who was a lifelong resident of Ray County, he spent a few months in South Carolina in 1959 working for Richard Petty's father Lee Petty. His Petty connection was a lifelong friendship.

    He worked in the automotive and R.V. Business for many years and also taught auto mechanics to local students. His last career was one of adventure because he delivered trucks to various locations across the U.S. and spent many hours exploring the roads of America.

    J.B. was a member of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

    He is survived by his wife, Bettie Lou Martin; three children, Mike Martin and his wife, LeaAnn of Smithville, Mo., Linda Emley of Richmond, Mo and Jane Flexter and her husband, Gregory of Indian Hill, Ohio. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

    Memorial services will be held at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church on Monday October 27 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 am to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Ray County Historical Society or the Dockery Baptist Church Building fund.
