Notes: James, the settler, is the third of the group of Pennsylvania-North Carolina group. He first settled in Pennsylvania, and according to family tradition, lived in Pennsylvania before going to North Carolina. Tradition relates that the name was formerly spelled with a "Q" and was changed to "C" at the suggestion of Dr. David Caldwell. He was associated with the Nottingham Company or Colony. The Nottingham Colony was a group of people who came to the area from the Nottingham Presbyterian Church in Rising Sun, Lancaster County, PA; it was established in old Rowan County, North Carolina..
