He first settled in Pennsylvania, and according to family tradition, lived in Pennsylvania before going to North Carolina. Tradition relates that the name was formerly spelled with a "Q" and was changed to "C" at the suggestion of Dr. David Caldwell. He was associated with the Nottingham Company or Colony.
