The actions of the Mormons in Missouri greatly exasperated him, and he took an active part in the war which resulted in their expulsion from Missouri. The doctrines of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church were in harmony with his own and he was an earnest member of that body. In 1854 he was a Justice of the Peace in Missouri.230 James served as Justice of the Peace for eleven years. In 1870 James was a Public Administrator in Missouri.230 James held this position for twelve years. He died on 4 October 1886 at the age of 70 in Ray County, Missouri.
